Giá vàng có lúc giảm tới 1% vào ngày thứ Ba (20/9) khi đồng USD và lợi suất trái phiếu Mỹ tăng, và nhà đầu tư quân bình vị thế trước kỳ vọng Cục Dự trữ Liên bang Mỹ (Fed) sẽ nâng lãi suất mạnh tay trong tuần này.

Kết thúc phiên giao dịch ngày thứ Ba, hợp đồng vàng giao ngay lùi 0.66% xuống 1,664.99 USD/oz, dao động gần mức thấp nhất trong 29 tháng đã ghi nhận hồi tuần trước. Hợp đồng vàng tương lai mất 0.26% còn 1,673.8 USD/oz.

Chuyên gia phân tích cấp cao Edward Moya tại Oanda nhận định: “Vàng không thể rũ bỏ bất kỳ lo ngại thắt chặt chính sách quyết liệt nào từ Fed… lợi suất tiếp tục tăng cao, đặc biệt trong đoạn cuối ngắn của đường cong lợi suất – điều đó chỉ gây áp lực cho vàng”.

Fed được kỳ vọng sẽ nâng lãi suất thêm ít nhất 75 điểm cơ bản khi kết thúc cuộc họp chính sách kéo dài 2 ngày vào ngày thứ Tư (21/9).

Các ngân hàng trung ương khác cũng được dự báo sẽ tiếp tục thắt chặt chính sách tiền tệ trong bối cảnh lạm phát tăng cao. Thuỵ Điển đã nâng lãi suất thêm 1 điểm phần trăm vào ngày thứ Ba. Anh, Na Uy, Thuỵ Sĩ và Nhật Bản cũng sẽ tổ chức các cuộc họp chính sách tiền tệ trong tuần này.

Lãi suất cao thường làm giảm sức hấp dẫn của vàng vì làm tăng chi phí cơ hội cho việc nắm giữ tài sản không đem lại lợi suất.

Jim Wyckoff, Chuyên gia phân tích cấp cao tại Kitco Metals, cho biết: “Một chính sách tiền tệ ‘diều hâu’ quyết liệt từ Fed… đã thúc đẩy đồng USD và lợi suất trái phiếu Mỹ, cả 2 đều là những tài sản cạnh tranh với kim loại trú ẩn an toàn”.

Đồng USD đã dao động gần mức đỉnh 2 thập kỷ, làm vàng trở nên đắt đỏ hơn đối với người nắm giữ những đồng tiền khác. Lợi suất trái phiếu Chính phủ Mỹ kỳ hạn 2 năm cũng chạm mức cao nhất trong gần 15 năm.
